About the OmniPod System

How does the OmniPod System compare to conventional insulin pumps?
Like conventional insulin pumps, the OmniPod System features precise, personalized continuous insulin delivery with basal rate and bolus delivery options, safety checks and alarm features. The difference lies in the OmniPod System’s award-winning, innovative wireless two-part design, which eliminates the tubing while featuring virtually pain-free[1] automated cannula insertion and a fully integrated FreeStyle® blood glucose meter. This makes the OmniPod System simple to learn and easy to live with. In addition, the OmniPod System allows you to get started on continuous insulin therapy with a much lower upfront cost than conventional insulin pumps.

Is the OmniPod System approved for everyone — even children and teens?
The OmniPod is approved for people of all ages with diabetes.

How small is the OmniPod System?
Designed for discretion, the OmniPod is: 1.6" x 2.4" x 0.7". The Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) is about the same size as a personal digital assistant (PDA): 2.6" x 4.3" x 1.0".

Can I travel while using the OmniPod System?
Yes. We recommend that you contact the airlines for information on current security requirements. The Personal Diabetes Manager and OmniPods can safely pass through airport x-ray machines. If the security detector goes off, tell the security screener that you have diabetes and wear an insulin pod.

Can I play sports while wearing the OmniPod?
Yes. You can play sports and participate in physical activities while wearing the OmniPod. When changing pods, we recommend choosing the most appropriate site for the planned activities (when possible).  For more suggestions, please contact our Customer Support department.

More about the OmniPod insulin pod

Does the OmniPod come pre-filled with insulin?
The OmniPod does not come pre-filled with insulin; you use the fill syringe enclosed with each OmniPod to fill it with the amount of insulin you need for up to three days.

What type of insulin should I use with the OmniPod System?
The OmniPod is indicated for use with rapid-acting U-100 insulin.

How much insulin does the OmniPod hold?
The OmniPod can deliver up to 200 units of insulin over a 3-day period.

What type of adhesive does the OmniPod use?
The OmniPod uses a Hypafix adhesive similar to the adhesive used with current infusion sets. This adhesive is designed to hold the pod securely in place for the duration of wear.

Where on my body can I wear the OmniPod?
The OmniPod’s automated cannula insertion enables you to wear it many places. We recommend that you begin on your abdomen since it is easy to access and see what you’re doing. Once you have mastered using the OmniPod, however, you can wear it on your hip, upper thigh, lower back, or the back of your upper arm — in fact, anywhere that you have a layer of fatty tissue. Of course, you want to avoid wearing the OmniPod within 2" of your navel, and in other areas where belts, waistbands, or tight clothing may rub against, disturb, or dislodge it.

How long do I wear each OmniPod?
The OmniPod can deliver up to 200 units of insulin over a 3-day period. For example, if you need 150 units of insulin over a 3-day period, you’ll fill the OmniPod with 150 units and wear it for 3 days. If you need more than 200 units of insulin over a 3-day period, you will fill it with 200 units and wear it until the insulin runs outs. The OmniPod System will alert you when it’s time to change the OmniPod.

How long does the OmniPod last after activation?
You can wear the OmniPod for up to 3 days after activation depending on your insulin needs.

What is the length of the OmniPod’s cannula?
The OmniPod’s cannula is 9 millimeters. During the OmniPod’s virtually pain-free[1] automated cannula insertion, the cannula is inserted to a depth of approximately 6.5 millimeters at a 45-degree angle.

  Is the OmniPod itself waterproof?
In general, the OmniPod can be worn safely while bathing or swimming. It has an IPX8 watertight rating; this international standard means that the OmniPod will function normally in 8 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. As a precaution, if you plan to be in water for a long time, we recommend that you get out occasionally to make sure that the adhesive is still securely attached to your skin. Because the temperature of most hot tubs can spoil insulin, making it ineffective, we do not recommend wearing the OmniPod in a hot tub, unless the OmniPod is kept out of the water.

More about the Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM)

How long do the batteries last in the PDM?
The PDM batteries last approximately 4 weeks.

What if I leave my PDM at home (at the office, at the gym, etc)?
Your OmniPod will continue to deliver your current background (or basal) insulin, even if you do not have your PDM with you. However, you will not be able to make changes to your basal delivery, deliver bolus doses, or respond to OmniPod alarms or alerts unless you have the PDM with you.

What happens if I lose my PDM?
Our experience has been that very few people lose their PDM. However, if you do lose your PDM, please contact Customer Support immediately. You will be able to purchase a replacement.

  Is the PDM waterproof?
The PDM is not waterproof. Do not place it in or near water.

How the OmniPod System Communicates

How do the OmniPod and PDM communicate with each other?
The OmniPod and PDM communicate using wireless technology, enabling you to manage your diabetes with complete discretion and ease.

Do the OmniPod and the PDM always have to be near each other?
No, the OmniPod and PDM do not always have to be near each other because they are not in constant communication. You only need to have them near each other when you need to program insulin delivery or respond to OmniPod alarms or alerts.

How close do the OmniPod and the PDM need to be to communicate with each other?
For programming insulin delivery or responding to OmniPod alarms or alerts, the PDM and OmniPod need to be within 24" of each other. Otherwise, they do not need to be near each other at all. The OmniPod will continue to deliver your current background (or basal) insulin, even if your PDM is not nearby.

What if someone near me is also wearing an OmniPod?
During fill, each OmniPod establishes a unique, one-to-one relationship with your Personal Diabetes Manager, so there is no chance of someone else’s PDM interfering with your OmniPod.

How to order the OmniPod System

How do I order the OmniPod System?
First, make sure the OmniPod System is available in your area. If the OmniPod System is available in your area, you will be able to access order forms online or through your healthcare provider’s office. The OmniPod System is a prescription-only device, so you will need to work with your healthcare provider to complete the order forms.

How much does the OmniPod System cost?
The OmniPod System allows you to get started on continuous insulin therapy with a much lower upfront cost than conventional insulin pumps. The OmniPod System Starter Kit, which includes the Personal Diabetes Manager and two OmniPods, has a list price of $800, whereas conventional insulin pumps have list prices of $5,000-$6,500. Each box of 10 OmniPods has a list price of $345. Depending on your insulin needs, you will use approximately one box of OmniPods per month. Of course, your actual cost for the OmniPod System will depend on your insurance coverage.
